Caprese Salad: A Fresh and Simple Italian Classic

Caprese Salad, or Insalata Caprese, is a quintessential Italian dish known for its simplicity and vibrant flavors. Featuring fresh tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fragrant basil, this salad embodies the essence of Italian cuisine. Perfect as a light appetizer or a refreshing side dish, it’s a great way to enjoy seasonal ingredients at their best.

Ingredients for Caprese Salad

  • 4 large ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • 8 oz (225g) fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    • Arrange the tomato slices on a serving platter.
    • Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on top of each tomato slice, or alternatively, arrange the tomato and cheese slices in an overlapping pattern.
  2. Add the Basil:
    • Tuck fresh basil leaves between the tomato and mozzarella slices. You can either leave them whole or tear them into smaller pieces for a more rustic look.
  3. Season the Salad:
    • Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil evenly over the tomatoes and mozzarella.
    • If using, drizzle balsamic vinegar over the salad for added tanginess.
    • Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve immediately to enjoy the freshest flavors. The salad can be served at room temperature or slightly chilled.
