Caprese Salad, or Insalata Caprese, is a quintessential Italian dish known for its simplicity and vibrant flavors. Featuring fresh tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fragrant basil, this salad embodies the essence of Italian cuisine. Perfect as a light appetizer or a refreshing side dish, it’s a great way to enjoy seasonal ingredients at their best.
Ingredients for Caprese Salad
- 4 large ripe tomatoes, sliced
- 8 oz (225g) fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- ¼ cup fresh basil leaves
- 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients:
- Arrange the tomato slices on a serving platter.
- Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on top of each tomato slice, or alternatively, arrange the tomato and cheese slices in an overlapping pattern.
- Add the Basil:
- Tuck fresh basil leaves between the tomato and mozzarella slices. You can either leave them whole or tear them into smaller pieces for a more rustic look.
- Season the Salad:
- Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil evenly over the tomatoes and mozzarella.
- If using, drizzle balsamic vinegar over the salad for added tanginess.
- Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
- Serve:
- Serve immediately to enjoy the freshest flavors. The salad can be served at room temperature or slightly chilled.
